As a cheaper model in our review, this Lenovo IdeaPad is a great option for gamers on a budget. The 9th Generation Intel Core i5 is a great mid-level CPU measuring speeds of between 2.4 and 4.1 GHz. And while the dedicated 4GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 GPU is not great for playing games in 4K, it can more than handle sims 4 and a host of those extra downloads. Lenovo have also equipped this model with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD.
It has a 1080p resolution IPS panel screen, which is great for wide viewing angles and splendid colour reproduction. Screen brightness hovers at around 250nits. This is fairly decent, but may prove problematic in some very bright lighting conditions. But this is fairly standard, and the matt screen coating does well to ward off annoying glare. The contrast ratio of 1500:1 also gives some texture to image rendering, so long as you have the right lighting conditions.
With one Ethernet port, one HDMI, two USB 3.1, one 1x USB 3.0 Type-C and one combined 3.5 mm audio jack, connectivity isn’t the best, but its not the worst either. The USB-C port is also sadly lacking in a thunderbolt technology, meaning no fast charging for this model. The Dolby speakers achieve ample levels with little background noise, though they are lacking in depth and those base notes.

The full-sized keyboard feels good under the fingers, and has minimal bend. Monochrome backlighting is adjustable in two tiers, and has a fairly decent brightness level for playing long into the night. There are also buttons at the top of the keyboard to control the fan. Switch from ‘quiet mode’ to ‘quick mode’ as needed, cooling your system down when it needs it the most. Unfortunately, the track pad is not as responsive as it could be, resulting in some difficulty navigating the click-pad areas. It takes a bit of getting used to, but is not ultimately a deal breaker!
For a budget laptop this does pack a punch, and is more than capable of running Full HD games with fast-paced sequences. So, it should be more than enough for a budding Sims 4 gamer. It is also one of our top players for battery life, clocking up an impressive 7 hours with medium usage!

The Acer Nitro 5 has featured in a few of our reviews for gaming laptops. And here is why. It has a lot of fantastic features, great for mid level gaming capabilities, and at a fantastic price. Plus, it has the capability for video and image editing. It does have similarities to the Lenovo laptop in this review, so the choice between the two will come down to which make, build and internal features you prefer.
With this model, the AMD Ryzen 5 4600H would put an intel i7 core through its paces, and when combined with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 GPU with 4GB VRAM, it is a match made in heaven. If you are itching to buy the latest expansion packs like Star Wars, and already have a bunch of others taking up your storage, no problem! The CPU and GPU together perform eye-watering speeds, while the 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD boosts the most demanding. If you want more memory, no problem! As with all Acer products, there is the option to upgrade the SSD and RAM.
As is generally accepted, the IPS panel is perfect for wider viewing angles, while the 1080p Full HD display creates crisp images with no blurring or ghosting, assisted by the 144Hz refresh rate. With a setup like this, you may well want to spend hours getting the feel of the Acer gaming experience. Thanks to CoolBoost technology, this is not a problem. The twin-fan design and two slots set into the base provide your system with maximum cooling power when you need it most. This is backed up by NitroSense
And whilst you are gaming, the keyboard will be a joy to use. Set up to be compatible with WASD arrow keys, you can rest assured it is as intuitive as you want it to be. As is normal, the base notes leave a little to be desired, but the result is impressive for the sizer and price point.

The standard OS that comes with this model is Windows 10, so well above the recommended requirements.

Gamin is intuitive, and the storage space as standard is good, with the ability to upgrade if you are in the market. Whilst Dell have not set this model apart from the crowd with any flashy features, this is still a good option for a mid-range laptop. Its capabilities extend beyond just being a good gaming laptop for sims 4, and the IPS panel has a great colour rendering and wide-viewing angles. The 1080p FHD resolution also come with anti-glare coating for easy playing in most ambient light conditions. And when supported by the discrete Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 with 6 GB GDDR5, it opens up the whole world of gaming to you. The Intel Core i7-8750H works in tandem with the GPU to boost those heavy-graphics games, and with no screen tearing or blurring. But it is the memory that is really special!
The 16 GB RAM is generous, but it is the 256 GB SSD and 1TB HDD that combines to bring you the latest technology. Literally. This is the Solid State Hard Drive we were talking about earlier. You might not notice its performance, though this is pretty much what it was designed for. To run seamlessly in the background to bring you the best performance at all levels. This is definitely a good option for those of you who love to play a variety of games with the newest and best upgrades.
Best 11-inch Laptop in 2020 for Portability and Performance
A couple of caveats with this model: the hinge, which sits in the centre of the laptop, stoping 2 inches short of the laptop edges. Open the lid from the corners, and you place strain on the screen as it bends. There have been some reported issues with this in previous models. If you are aware of this, however, and only open the lid from the middle it shouldn’t present too much of a problem. The system can also get a little overheated during long gaming sessions, so it would be good to see Dell address this in their next model, perhaps installing a better fan system and some kind of boost technology.
Dell have included Windows 10 as standard, as with all models in this review. Plus, the inclusion of SmartByte for better streaming capability is a nice touch.
The keyboard is tactile and very enjoyable to use, and little flex when applying pressure. Whilst the trackpad feels a little gritty under the fingers, it is very responsive. This model also comes with Waves MaxxAudio Pro speakers, which are great for gaming but not so great for music.
A nice additional feature of this laptop is the blue grips or ‘feet’ on the bottom. This stops your laptop sliding around, and is useful if you travel on trains and the like. And with 7 hours battery life, searching for a seat with a socket is a thing of the past. Plus, at 22.7 mm thickness for the 15 Inch laptop, it is very portable and wont take up too much space in your bag.
Connectivity is good, with one mini DP, one HDMI, three USB-A, and ethernet, and one thunderbolt 3 port! It also features a full sized SD slot, and 2 additional RAM slots internally. One great thing you can say about Dell products is their ability to be customised for bigger and better memory, graphics and processing power. Though a little on the higher priced side, considering the caveats, it is still a good laptop for multi-purpose use. And with the SSHD, this laptop has the capability for Sims 4 with all your favourite expansion packs.
