Why don’t I get all Freeview channels? How to regain lost TV channels

0

‘Why don’t I get all Freeview channels?’, that’s what many Freeview customers wonder once their TV has been set up.

Whether using a Smart TV, a regular TV and a set-top box, a streaming stick or mobile device, there are many ways to watch Freeview. However, it can be very disheartening to see that not all the channels are available.

Customers may start out their Freeview experience with many channels, but, over time, viewers may lose access to certain channels due to nationwide changes. In 2020 especially, there have been many channel changes on Freeview.

Always stay up-to-date with any Freeview changes via the service update page.

For now, here’s a look at some reasons as to why all Freeview channels aren’t available, as well as what can be done to try and regain channels that have been lost.

Why don’t I get all Freeview channels?

Unfortunately, when opting for Freeview, customers can expect not to receive all channels. Channel access varies across the UK and in some cases customers simply won’t have the channel access in their area.

The best way to check which channels are available in your area is to use the Freeview postcode checker.

By using this tool before installing Freeview, you can decide whether it’s the best choice. There may be alternative TV providers that have better coverage in your area.

Freeview: Retune missing channels

Following on from the postcode checker, if it turns out that you should have access to many more channels than you’re seeing on the system, try retuning the TV.

The retuning process may vary from device to device, see our guides on retuning a TV with built-in Freeview and retuning Freeview on a Samsung TV.

Every few months, Freeview systems should be retuned as changes often take place on the network.

In 2020, Freeview has experienced a huge retune – the Freeview 700mhz clearance programme. This means that some channels are moving to new frequencies. For customers, this essentially means that channels will move to different numbers.

June 8th 2020 saw some more channel changes on Freeview including ITVBe+1 moving from 58 to 97. Freeview channel Now 70’s is returning in the Manchester area (channel 78), Hochanda is no longer on channel 785 but will be on channel 85, instead. ITV3+1 has moved from 34 to 58 and a new entertainment channel is launching on channel 34 – Merit.

Does Freesat have the same channels as Freeview?

If after a Freeview retune, more channels haven’t been added, it may be best to opt for another TV service that provides more channels.

Freesat advertises that it can provide over 180 channels and over 20 in HD. With Freeview, you’ll usually get more than 70 standard, and 15 HD, channels. While Freeview looks to provide fewer channels, it may have more coverage across the UK, meaning that it is more accessible.

Also, consider streaming sticks when deciding on a TV provider. Amazon Fire TV, Roku, Apple, Now TV all provide viewing options for a small cost. Enjoy on-demand TV and great apps such as Netflix, too.
