Can you use Chromecast with TiVo?

If along with your TiVo device, you also own a Google Chromecast, you might be wondering if there is a way to connect both of them together. This is because it is obviously extra work to change your TV’s input source when you want to cast something to the TV.

However, Chromecast and TiVo are two different devices and are not compatible with each other. Thus, there is no way to connect them together. Please don’t be worried though as we have the solution to this problem!

Can I cast directly to my TiVo device?

Unlike some Smart TVs and Android boxes, TiVo does not come with a built-in Chromecast. Thus, you can not use it as one. However, TiVo does come with the support for DIAL.

DIAL, or “Discovery and Launch” is a protocol initially developed by Netflix and YouTube. It was only used in the original Chromecast. It allows for smart devices such as TV’s to become discoverable by devices on the same Wi-Fi network. Then it will enable content to be cast on the TV.

So, even though the TiVo does not have a built-in Chromecast, you can still cast your application directly to it. So, you won’t need to switch the TV input to Chromecast when you need to cast something.

In streaming apps such as Netflix and YouTube, the option to cast to the TiVo device should come by default. Just press the cast button, as you do with your Chromecast, and your smartphone should discover the TiVo device. This method should work in most of the streaming apps.

Enjoy streaming content without losing internet connection!

With TiVo, Chromecast and all the apps in between, there is a ton of entertaining content available to watch nowadays – the last thing anyone needs when watching is a dodgy internet connection.

YouTube does not discover my TiVo device

As outlined above, apps such as YouTube should work with your TiVo device by default. However, if in any case, the YouTube app does not recognise your TiVo device, then you need to link the two.

To do that, open the YouTube app on your TiVo and go to the settings. Next locate and select the “Link TV and Phone” button. Then you will be taken through steps which will let you link your smartphone and TiVo device. After this process, you will be able to cast from YouTube to your TiVo device.
