Seeing iCloud “authentication error” on a Windows 10 device? Here’s what to do now.
The iCloud is a storage facility native to Apple devices, however, anyone can access their iCloud account via the iCloud website. From photos to emails to backing up important files, there are many uses to having an iCloud account.
For many people, checking emails is one of the first things to do in a day. So, if you’re faced with an iCloud “authentication error” and you’re prevented from seeing emails, it can be very concerning.
iCloud storage is often a saviour for many. Once your device storage is reaching its limit, saving things to the iCloud means that nothing needs to be deleted.
Here’s a look at home to overcome iCloud authentication error on Windows 10 devices.
What is an authentication error?
When you’re faced with an authentication error on any device, this means that there is an issue authenticating the Wi-Fi connection.
Often the Wi-Fi will be working fine and it’s the device in use that’s encountering an error.
Thankfully, an authentication error is often easily fixed. A simple re-entering of passwords or alteration of settings should get things up and running again in no time.
Remember:
- Always check that your device is up-to-date and running on the latest software.
- Check that your Wi-Fi connection is working as it should.
- Consider whether any anti-virus protection is interfering with iCloud running correctly.

iCloud authentication error with Windows 10
If any Windows 10 users have attempted to head to their iCloud storage to see a message reading “Unable to sign in because of a problem communicating with iCloud“, don’t fret – you’re not alone.
An instant fix to this error, if you’re using the iCloud app, is to head online to the iCloud website and log in online.
However, if you wish to use the Windows app, the authentication error can be fixed by following the steps below:
- Uninstall, then reinstall, iCloud.
- Log in using username and password.
- If login is unsuccessful, reset Apple ID password.
- Now, you should be able to log into iCloud without a hitch.
If you’re still having authentication issues, please check that the Windows iCloud app is compatible with your system. See a full list of the system requirements here.
It’s also worth checking that the iCloud system status is “Available”. Do this by heading to Apple’s System Status page here.

iCloud “unable to load contacts”
As well as authentication issues, the iCloud app can encounter some issues when it comes to loading contacts, too.
It’s essential to always back up any information such as contacts, and reminders so that you don’t lose anything important.
- Ensure that the iCloud app has been downloaded from the official Windows Store.
- As outlined above, ensure that you’re running on the latest Windows software and that the iCloud app is the latest version.
- If you’ve used all your mobile data, your device won’t stay up-to-date, therefore it won’t be able to load contacts, reminders or calendar events.
- You can also ‘turn on’ what you wish to update on your device. Apple states the following instructions for Windows users: “On your PC, open iCloud for Windows. Check your Apple ID and make sure that you select what you want to update (Mail, Contacts, Calendars, and Tasks)“.
